Channel Overview:
As a creative, I started my Youtube channel as a passion project — an experiment. I wanted to see if I could create engaging videos using different angles and shooting techniques (and being an introvert, no talking—just my words) using just my android phone.
What I discovered was that I loved the post-production process even more than the actual filming. I taught myself how to edit videos, including color grading, adding background music, and creating video thumbnails.
My favorite part of the process is putting everything together and watching the final product come to life. It’s gratifying to know that my videos are entertaining and informative, and I’m always looking for ways to improve my skills. Whether it’s trying out new editing software or coming up with creative thumbnail designs, I’m always looking for ways to make my channel better.
Channel Engagement:
Before we go through the process of dissecting the Channel’s Analytics, I’d like to touch upon the most important part of creating a channel: Building a community!
I believe that every person has a story to tell, but it’s our personality that makes people come back for more. The more you showcase who you are as a person, the more people will relate to you. And they will find you. Your people.
I have a particular video that has garnered a lot of lovely comments all over the world when it was published. You can check all the heart-warming comments in this Youtube video link. Otherwise, here are some of my favorites:
YOUTUBE ANALYTICS
Traffic Reach Case study: This channel was not marketed in any way. The channel relied on the platform’s organic reach, with little effort being put into keywords for titles, descriptions, and tags. My main concern during this time was to learn about the video creation process.
Result: During the early days of the channel, I was posting consistently, at least once a week on a weekend. Analytics show that it reached a lot more audience in the beginning stages, quickly going down as soon as I stopped posting videos. However, it would seem that there’s still some traffic through the months of no videos being uploaded, earning 500 subscribers with only 19 videos posted as of date.
Traffic Source Case study: Since this channel was not marketed through social media or paid forms of advertising, I wondered how people where finding my videos.
Result: Analytics showed that Youtube itself was my main source of traffic. It was pushing my videos in their search results, particularly with one video which seemed to have caught a popular search keyword in a less competitive topic area. This was great to know, as it meant that Youtube was helping me to get more views and subscribers without much involvement on my part, especially because I’m delivering for an under-served audience.
Viewer Age Case study: I had the intention of serving an older audience, since my topic of choice, along with the aesthetic of my channel and videos, are obviously geared to such age demographic.
Result: I was surprised to find out that my actual viewers are a lot younger than I expected. I believe that this is due to the “viral” video that I uploaded which has a topic that is more popular with the younger crowd. This has made a direct impact of the overall result in viewer age.
Viewer Gender Case study: As the channel was going to document my life as a homemaker, I geared my channel towards a female audience.
Result: As expected, majority of my audience were women — my initial target. However, the men were not far behind at 30%. Based on analytics, I believe this is due to the popular video which had a gender-neutral topic. This video, again, paved more male viewers to become part of my audience, in spite of the feminine aesthetics and approach of the channel.
CONCLUSION
Whether you’re posting once a week or once a day, consistency is key to keeping your viewers engaged. In addition, the topics you choose to cover will directly affect your viewer demographic more than your branding ever will. As you gather data through your analytics, you may find it necessary to pivot in order to reach a wider audience. Taking these steps will greatly improve the reach and impact of your Youtube channel.
Note: This channel is no longer active. I do, however, have plans of producing more content for this channel in the future (when I can afford the leisure). 🙂
